A twin-turbocharged 585 hp V8 not good enough for you? Thank your lucky stars, because Mercedes-Benz has shoehorned its most potent V12 under the vast bonnet of the elegant S-Class Coupe to create the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe.
Of course, being the thoughtful Germans they are, Mercedes has seen fit not to mess with the standard S-Class Coupe's gorgeous looks, only fitting the usual AMG enhancements such as a deeper front air dam, side skirts and rear diffuser with quad tail pipes. Chrome detailing on the front grille, air intakes, side flicks and front splitter, as well as polished 20-inch forged alloys help set it apart from the lesser S 63.
Inside, however, much is the same. There are heavily bolstered seats upholstered in quilted designo AMG Exclusive nappa leather, AMG badges on all four backrests and an AMG emblem debossed onto the front armrest. Nappa leather also adorns the dashboard, headliner, door panels and grab handles. The steering wheel has been reshaped and features an AMG badge on the bottom and aluminium shift paddles.
The real difference is in the engine bay. Whereas the S 63 comes with just a 5.5 litre biturbo V8 producing a piffling 585 PS and 900 Nm of torque, the S 65 steps it up to 630 PS from 4,800-5,400 rpm and – get this – 1,000 Nm delivered from just 2,300 rpm all the way to 4,300 rpm.
That immense power is generated by the now ubiquitous 6.0 litre twin-turbo V12 mated to an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-TRONIC auto 'box. Drive goes exclusively to the rear wheels – unlike the S 63, there is no optional 4MATIC four-wheel drive system. It takes just 4.1 seconds to move the enormous barge to 100 km/h from a standstill, and the top speed is limited as ever to 250 km/h.
The car comes as standard with an AMG-tuned sports suspension with Magic Body Control. The latter includes Active Body Control (ABC), Road Surface Scan and a curve tilting function. Also standard are composite brakes (ceramic items are optional and are 20% lighter), speed-sensitive electromechanical sports steering and a lithium-ion battery. The latter saves over 20 kg on what must still be a pretty hefty car.
Order books are open for the Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe in Germany ahead of its market launch in September, with a starting price of a cool €244,009.50 (RM1.06 million).
