The much-applauded Ford GT supercar that debuted a decade ago could have its successor revealed at the upcoming 2015 Detroit motor show in January, according to Carscoops. The GT was conceived as a homage to the 1960s Le Mans winning original, dubbed the Ford GT40.

It is rumoured that the GT's successor could be powered by a reworked, turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine, said to develop at least 600 hp. Much like its quasi-retro predecessor, the new car is said to be limited to a total of 1,200 units - way below the total of 4,038 units produced for the Ford GT.

The Ford GT possessed a mid-mounted, 5.4 litre supercharged V8 engine that displaced 550 hp and 678 Nm of torque. Transmission was a six-speed manual gearbox and performance figures included a 0-100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds and a Porsche Carrera GT-matching top speed of 330 km/h.

Having to debut the car in 2015 would make sense for those who are well-versed in the Blue Oval's sporting history as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Ford GT40's first win at the Daytona 2000 race in February 1965. The Ford GT debuted as part of the company's centennial celebrations back in the early 2000s.
