The long-awaited replacement for the Alfa Romeo 159 (pictured) is set to make its world debut next June, Automotive News Europe understands. Known internally as "Tipo 952", the replacement was initially touted to receive the Giulia nameplate but is now expected to come with a different name.

It is understood that the now defunct 159 was positioned against the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. With that said, the new car will be a tad bigger and is believed to slot in between the BMW 3 Series and the 5 Series. A Maserati-developed platform, dubbed Giorgio, will likely underpin Alfa Romeo's new model.

Said platform possesses a rear-wheel drive layout with optional AWD capability. Nothing solid has been mentioned in terms of engine options but it is presumed the new car will be offered with a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. A flagship GTA variant with added firepower is also likely.

Along with the 159 replacement, the company is also bent on introducing a total of eight new models by 2018 as part of CEO Sergio Marchionne's annual sales target of 400,000 units in 2018. Apart from the 159 replacement, Alfa Romeo is also set to introduce another flagship sedan along with an Audi Q5-rivaling SUV.
