According to a report, Alfa Romeo is planning to come out with a series of high-performance engines - the first three of which will be introduced as early as the middle of next year - in a move to renew the connection to its sport-oriented heritage.
The new engines, two petrol units and a diesel, are set to be unveiled when the brand's new midsize sedan - codenamed the "Tipo 952" - premieres in June, Automotive News Europe reports. The car is the long-awaited replacement for the Alfa Romeo 159.
One of these will be a top-of-the-line 2.9 litre DI twin turbo V6, re-engineered from the 3.0 litre used in the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte. Sources have revealed that the mill will be good for up to 480 hp.
The other petrol unit will be a 2.0 litre DI turbocharged four-pot called the Global Medium Engine with output tunes of 180 hp to 330 hp. It will be paired with manual and automatic transmissions, and applications will include both rear-wheel-drive and AWD. The new car is also set to wear a new 2.2 litre turbodiesel, with outputs ranging from 135 hp to 210 hp.
The 952 sedan is due to be unveiled in June. Its name has not been revealed, but ANE states that it will not be known as the Giulia, contrary to that mentioned in earlier reports.
Aside from the new sedan, the Italian brand is also working on a midsize SUV. Known as "Tipo 949," the vehicle is expected to enter the market in late 2016. A new high-output V6 diesel - based on the 3.0 litre unit seen currently on Maserati and Jeep offerings - will make its way on to this one. A provisional power output of 340 hp has been bandied for it.
