This is the Opel Adam S, the top-of-the-range, warmed-over version of Opel's "super-cool" supermini. The car shown in Geneva is a near-production preview, signalling the company's intention to focus on the Adam's sporty nature, following on from the car's rally programme.
Keen eyes may spot the new front lip spoiler, flared side skirts, protruding black rear bumper cut-out and the large rear spoiler, adding a hint of aggression to the standard Adam's looks. The S also sits on unique 18-inch wheels shod with 225/35 rubber.
The interior is dominated by beefy Recaro bucket seats with integrated headrests, as well as red leather trim on the steering wheel, handbrake lever and gearknob. Also spicing up the cabin are red stripes across the grey dashboard and door trim, red stitching and "S" logos on the dashboard and instrument panel.
Under the bonnet, Opel has strapped a turbo to the Adam's 1.4 litre four-cylinder engine, bumping the power up by 51 hp to 150 hp. Torque has also swelled to 220 Nm, a whopping 90 Nm increase. Opel has yet to release a 0-100 km/h time (shame) but they do say the Adam S will hit a top speed of 220 km/h.
Keeping the power on the road is a specially-tuned performance chassis, as well as sharper, more direct steering. OPC "S" performance disc brakes – 16-inch at the front, 15 at the rear – are tasked with slowing the car down with conviction.
So, the Opel Adam S – a hint of things to come? An OPC/Vauxhall VXR version, perhaps?
