Another day, another prototype on fire. Being a development engineer sounds like a fun job, but clearly it's not without its hazards. Our contributing spy photographers saw this Ford Super Duty on test in a desert with ambient temperatures of about 50 degrees. Seemed like just another day making sure Ford's next generation heavy duty pickup truck will be up to mark in hot weather.
Suddenly, a fire started somewhere in the front wheel well on the driver's side. 3 minutes later, the whole front end was engulfed in flames, and by the time 20 minutes passed, the whole truck was destroyed. You can see blobs of melted aluminium on the side of the road, which means the Super Duty will use lots of aluminium in its body just like the relatively smaller Ford F150.
