Listen closely to the sounds of the new Formula E teams in this video and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the nuances in terms of how they got off the line. I personally like how the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team car sounded. It was spinning up the rear wheels, and it sounded like a remote control car on steroids.

Anyhow, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has approved the homologation of the eight manufacturers that will provide powertrains to the 10 teams competing in the second season of the all-electric FIA Formula E Championship. For the 2015/2016 season, which begins in Beijing on October 17, the series will become an open championship, allowing manufacturers to pursue their own in-house innovations, beginning with the development of bespoke powertrains.

In a bid to cut down costs and promote innovation, the manufacturers' scope is limited to the powertrain – specifically the e-motor, the inverter, the gearbox and the cooling system. Changes here have created the unique new sounds. Other parts of the car will remain largely the same.

Formula E has also released its official highlight reel of the first season, which was won by Nelson Piquet Jr (by a point from fellow ex-F1 driver Sébastien Buemi) and Renault e.Dams. Watch it below.
