Volkswagen will be adding a new compact SUV to its line-up in 2017 - the Tiguan Coupe. If all goes well, it will come with four engine variants, including a petrol-hybrid GTE model and a faster Tiguan Coupe R model, according to a report by Autocar UK.
The new sleek compact SUV will sit on the same MQB platform as the second-generation Tiguan, but with a sloping roofline, wider C-pillars, as well as steeper front and rear screens angles. Despite the Coupe name, though, it will still be a five-seater SUV with five-doors (including the tailgate). If you need to visualise how the Tiguan Coupe may look like, the Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe (pictured above) is a good reference point.
If the UK report is to be believed, an R variant is slated to arrive in 2018, 12 months after the standard version goes on sale. While nothing has been set in stone yet, it is said that the sportier version will have the same engine and gearbox as the Golf R - a high-powered 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol paired to a six-speed DSG, as well as 4Motion with electronic torque vectoring system.
The Tiguan Coupe R is said to go up against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG and the Audi RS Q3. Apparently, it'll have 300 hp and 380 Nm of torque, and will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds - that's not bad for an SUV, seeing that it's just 0.1 seconds slower than the lighter Golf R.
