Motorists up north, take note that all toll transactions at the Penang Bridge, Jitra, Bukit Kayu Hitam (North-South Expressway), Lunas and Kubang Semang (Butterworth-Kulim Expressway) toll plazas will be conducted electronically via PLUSMiles and Touch n Go cards or SmartTAG from September 9.
"To facilitate easier purchase and reload of PLUSMiles and Touch n Go cards, highway users will also be able to purchase preloaded RM5 PLUSMiles and Touch n Go cards at a promotional rate of RM5 (card is free) at these toll plazas beginning now until 31 December 2015," said PLUS COO Mohammad Fuad Khusairi.
One can also elect to purchase the SmartTAG at a promotional rate of RM96 (inclusive of 6% GST) at the above five toll plazas until Sept 30, while stocks last.
PLUS has thrown in some incentives that's sure to neutralise any dissatisfaction (not that there should be any). Class 1 vehicles paying toll electronically at the Jitra, Bukit Kayu Hitam, Lunas and Kubang Semang toll plazas will enjoy a 20% rebate from September 1 to December 31 2015. Penang Bridge users enjoying the existing 20% toll discount are not eligible for this rebate.
The 100% electronic toll collection initiative has been successfully implemented at the Sultan Iskandar Building (2008), Linkedua Highway (in stages since 2009), Kempas toll plaza (2014), Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau (November 2014) and Mambau and Lukut toll plazas on the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway (June 2014).
In June, the Malaysian Highway Authority announced that 12 toll plazas will go fully cashless from September 9. Besides the five above-mentioned locations, the others are:
- SMART Highway toll
- Dato Keramat toll on the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH)
- Ayer Panas, Sentul Pasar and Batu tolls on the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE)
- Gombak and Bentong tolls on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway (KLK)
