Another day, another batch of B-segment crossover spyshots – this time it's a SsangYong. Codenamed S102, it is one of the first fruits of Mahindra's acquisition of the company and is likely to be the production version of the XLV concept that will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The new crossover is being developed on a brand new platform together with Mahindra. The joint project will spawn two different cars – SsangYong's version (rumoured to be called the X100) is expected to be unveiled in the first half of next year, with the Mahindra arriving about six months later.

SsangYong and Mahindra are reportedly also working together on a 1.0 litre turbocharged engine to slot in this car, in the vein of Ford's EcoBoost three-cylinder mill. Like the latter, the little engine will also feature direct injection and variable valve timing. Turbocharged 1.6 litre petrol and diesel engines are also expected to be available.

In this size bracket and with those engine options, the SsangYong X100 – or whatever it will be called – looks set to go toe-to-toe with the Ford EcoSport, particularly in India. The crossover is expected play a significant role in the Korean company's "Promise 2016" plan to double its sales over three years.
