At the recent Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2014 challenge in Manila, Malaysian student teams swept up five awards, including three category victories.
The UiTM Eco-Sprint team from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam won the Prototype Hydrogen category, achieving an energy consumption figure of 77.6 km per kWh. In second place came the UKM 2 Car Fuel Cell team from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) that managed 52.1 km per kWh.
In the Prototype Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) diesel category, Monash University Malaysia's Team Monash 2 beat out the Gernas team from Qatar University with a fuel consumption figure of 116.6 km per litre. The team also won the Shell Helix Tribology Award, an off-track award for students who effectively demonstrated how lubrication engineering principles could be used to improve fuel economy.
UiTM bagged another victory in the Urban Concept Hydrogen category through its Eco-Planet team, who netted 44.5 km per litre.
The Shell Eco-marathon Asia challenge moved to the streets of Luneta Park in Manila having previously been held at the Sepang International Circuit. The highest-scoring team this year, How Much Ethanol from Panjavidhya Technological College in Thailand obtained an astonishing 2,730 km/l, equivalent to driving from Manila to Jakarta on one litre of ethanol and nearly beating the all-time record of 2,903 km/l set in 2012.
This year's event saw five out of 12 categories showing improved results over the previous year, despite the new, more challenging urban circuit.
"A street circuit certainly presents more difficulty as vehicles tend to consume more energy while navigating urban roads. The fact that teams are still making marked improvements on their scores and clocking new personal bests is extremely impressive," said Norman Koch, Shell Eco-marathon Technical Director.
