Say hello to the ultimate road-going R8, the Audi R8 Competition. As hinted by the name, the R8 Competition is inspired by Audi's R8 LMS ultra race car, and it boasts more power and lightweight carbon elements. To debut at the 2014 LA Auto Show, 60 units of the hottest R8 will be made for the USA.
The R8 Competition shares the same naturally-aspirated V10 FSI engine as the Audi R8 LMS race car that has won Daytona and Nurburgring 24 hour races, among other competitions.
The 5.2 litre unit pushes out 570 hp (equal to the limited edition R8 LMX, 20 hp more than the V10 Plus), and when combined with a seven-speed S tronic gearbox and a sport exhaust system, can do the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint in 3.2 seconds. Top speed is 320 km/h.
Audi is proud of the engine's reliability, stressing that its first major service is required only after approximately 13,000 miles (20,921 km) under race conditions or roughly one full race season, while competitor engines require a major service after each 24-hour race.
Matte carbon exterior elements consisting of a fixed rear spoiler, engine bay, mirror housings, flics, side blades, front spoiler and rear diffuser set the R8 Comp apart. The CF bits lower the car's weight and also provide greater downforce. Gloss black wheels with fat 305 cross-section rear tyres and ceramic brakes with anodised red brake calipers provide contrast.
The cabin gets a matte carbon fibre treatment and illuminated "R8 competition" door sill inlays. As the model is an Audi Exclusive Line vehicle, the owner can choose from a variety of interior and exterior colours as well as wheel designs. Order books open next month and deliveries are expected to start in early 2015.
