2016 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

Following a quickie of a teaser video, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible has finally been revealed in all its open-top glory. As you'd expect, the convertible variant of Chevy's sixth-generation pony car is pretty much the same machine roof down - the roof mechanism itself is said to be "segment's most-advanced top."

Among the many features touted by the fabric roof setup include a fully-automatic operation of the latches that release and secure the top. Also, an automatic solid tonneau cover is utilised when the roof is stowed away, providing the car with a cleaner outlook. Elsewhere, drivers can choose to raise or lower the fabric roof at up to speed of 48 km/h - the option to drop the top via remote access is also available.

Oddly enough, Chevrolet has decided to keep the actual speed of the roof's operation to itself and also if the entire assembly weighs less than its predecessor's setup. The electro-hydraulic powered roof features a multilayer construction comprised of acoustic and thermal barriers to minimise exterior noise and to help improve comfort levels in varying weather conditions.

"From the beginning, the Camaro's architecture was developed to incorporate a convertible with uncompromised driving dynamics. Customers will appreciate what they don't feel: quivers, cowl shake or an under-damped chassis typically found in a four-seat convertible," said head designer, Al Oppenheiser.

As mentioned earlier, the Camaro retains the coupe's interior layout as well as its myriad of engine/transmission options. Available in two trims, the LT and SS, the former will boast two engine options which include a turbocharged 2.0 litre four-pot and a 3.6 litre V6. Both mills are mated to either a six-speed manual or Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Power figures for the smaller engine include a rating of 275 hp and 400 Nm of torque, a chunk of which is available from 2,100 to 3,000 rpm. The V6, which features cylinder deactivation, direct injection and variable valve timing technology, pumps out a total of 335 hp and 385 Nm of twist.

At the top of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible range sits the SS variant. Said model is equipped with a 6.2 litre LT1 V8 engine that produces 455 hp and 617 Nm of torque. It, too, receives two gearbox options - a six-speed manual with Active Rev Match and Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic.

The car is now destined to make its motor show debut next year at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show before going on sale later in the year. Like its coupe sibling, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible will be produced at GM's Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan.
