There has to be a huge fanbase of the Back to the Future movie franchise over at Lexus. How else can one explain the fact that the Japanese carmaker has just released a teaser of its first, fully-functional hoverboard? Yes, you read that right. The boffins responsible for the LFA supercar have turned their attention to creating, what could be, the next major step in personal transportation.
As part of the brand's 'Amazing in Motion' series, an exercise that sees engineers pushing their creativity to present unique projects, the hoverboard is featured as the fourth instalment of the campaign. Not much is known about the Lexus hoverboard - the contraption utilises liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets, the former responsible for the smoke emanating from said device.
According to Engadget, a metal surface is hidden underneath the ground on which the hoverboard is seen levitating - so much for riding it to the shops and back, then. In terms of its aesthetics, the Lexus hoverboard appears as if it's ready to hit the shelves with a hefty price, thanks to it being fashioned out of natural bamboo and "high-tech" material. Even the marque's trademark 'spindle' grille appears to have been included.
