The Honda NSX, which made its debut in Detroit early this year but is not yet in showrooms, is limbering up for its first hill climb event. Honda's reborn supercar, badged as the Acura NSX in America, is the pace car for the 2015 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, which happens this weekend.
"The Acura NSX is the ultimate performance vehicle and a novel way to promote its capabilities is the iconic race up Pikes Peak. As the pace car, the beast that is NSX will not be fully let of its cage, but fans and drivers will still get a first glimpse of the unique character, performance and handling of the NSX in a one-of-a-kind racing environment," said Mike Accavitti, senior VP and GM of the Acura division.
The custom-liveried NSX will lead the field of 140 entrants to the top of the 4,302-metre Colorado mountain. Powering it through the 20 km, 156-turn course is a mid-mounted 3.5 litre twin-turbo V6 engine, mated to a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission and three-motor Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. Total system output is 550 hp. NSX tech in high detail here.
In a Pikes Peak first, Honda will install 24 cameras along the course to capture the NSX's climb with a 360-degree series of images. Acura's social media channels will transform the images into a video after the NSX reaches the top of the mountain. The run will also be covered live.
The reborn supercar will be driven by Sage Marie, senior manager of Honda's US PR team and a two-time Pikes Peak competitor and road racer. Accompanying the NSX on its maiden Pikes Peak run are the Acura ILX and TLX sedans and a previous-generation NSX!
