Just a couple of days after it was teased through a set of photos highlighting its Multibeam LED headlamp technology, the wraps have come off the 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class facelift in both four-door coupe and Shooting Brake forms. The cars are reportedly due to make their official debut at the Goodwood Festival at the end of the month.
Exterior revisions include a fresh front section, which aside from the optional Multibeam LED headlamps features a new diamond radiator grille, revised front bumper with large air intakes and a new splitter. At the back, there are new, slightly darkened tail lamps with multi-level function.
Inside, changes include a new free-standing eight-inch colour display for the head unit and the inclusion of a redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel.
Elsewhere, revisions to some function layouts help redefine things further – for example, the central control panel in the centre console has four instead of the previous two buttons, helping to simplify the operating process.
Material and trim have also been reworked - five interior colours, six trim finishes as well as grades of leather ranging from leather to Exclusive Passion leather offer a host of individualisation options.
A new AMG Line Plus has been added on to supplement the existing Exterior Sports package and AMG Line, extending individualisation options for the car. Also on the list is a Night package as well as new designo interior packages.
Five Euro 6-ready engine variants are available for the standard form CLS-Class – new to the fold is the CLS 220 BlueTEC, with 170 hp and 400 Nm on call in that one. The other diesel units are a four-cylinder unit in the CLS 250 BlueTEC with 204 hp and 500 Nm and a 258 hp and 620 Nm V6 in the CLS 350 BlueTEC.
Also new to the CLS is the 3.5 litre V6 turbocharged petrol unit in the CLS 400, which replaces the normally-aspirated CLS 350 CGI (306 hp and 370 Nm) in the lineup. Power output is 333 hp and 480 Nm, the last available across a 1,200 to 4,000 rpm range. Then, there's the 408 hp and 600 Nm V8 in the CLS 500.
Four of these models will be available in the future with permanent all-wheel drive, including the CLS 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC and the CLS 400 4MATIC.
Another new bit is the 9G-Tronic gearbox - the nine-speed automatic transmission with a hydrodynamic torque converter is utilised in the CLS 220 BlueTEC, CLS 250 BlueTEC, CLS 350 BlueTEC and CLS 500, replacing the previous 7G-Tronic Plus 'box.
As for the AMG angle, there's the CLS 63 AMG Coupe and Shooting Brake, in rear wheel-drive and AMG 4MATIC all wheel-drive guise as well as an S-Model, with the AMG 5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine offering 557 hp to 585 hp and 720 to 800 Nm depending on the version.
Aside from COMAND Online and an integrated Media Interface - now standard fitment - to connect an iPod and iPhone, the new CLS-Class also features a new package of services called "Mercedes connect me" in Europe. The package offers Mercedes-Benz emergency call, accident, maintenance and breakdown management via a standard-fit KOM module, with its own SIM card fitted in the vehicle.
