BMW-X6M-001

While the F16 BMW X6 is still hot off the press, Munich's engineers are already putting the finishing touches on the next-generation BMW X5 M and X6 M, as these spyshots from our European photographers show.

Despite the camouflage, one can see reworked front aprons with larger air intakes, deeper side sills, big wheels hiding massive brakes with blue callipers and cross-drilled discs, a redesigned rear valance and the signature M quad tailpipes.

The X6 M prototype also gets the dual-bar double kidney grilles that are becoming commonplace on M cars, as well as M3/M4-style side mirrors, although we believe that these touches will also be incorporated onto the production X5 M as well.

Powering both models will be the F10 M5's 4.4 twin-turbo V8 that is an uprated version of the mill that powers the outgoing versions of these super-SUVs. In the M5, the eight-pot develops 560 PS, 5 PS more than the current X5 M and X6 M, while torque remains the same at 680 Nm. Also reported to be shared with the M5 will be the sedan's seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission.

Expect both heavy-hitters (in the most literal sense of the term) to see the light of day at the Paris Motor Show in September.
