The Royal Malaysian Customs' (JKDM) Labuan branch has introduced the online e-Vehicle application system to more efficiently monitor the movement of Labuan-registered vehicles, Bernama reports.
The e-Vehicle system speeds up the process of identifying the status of Labuan-registered vehicles that are brought into Sabah and Sarawak. It can also determine the vehicles' locations in the Customs Major Areas (KUK), said JKDM director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad.
"The pioneer test for the e-Vehicle System had been carried out by the JKDM early this month and through the test, 27 vehicles were identified in Sabah and Sarawak that had violated Item 13 of the Customs Duty (Exemption) Order 2013 for bringing the vehicles to the KUK for more than 90 days in a year," he told reporters after launching the system yesterday.
One has to register his or her vehicle's number plate with the JKDM to obtain a password which can be used to access the e-Vehicle system, Khazali said. He added that the system could be accessed through a computer or smartphone.
"Residents in Labuan, particularly, who frequently enter and leave Sabah and Sarawak, need no longer queue up at the vehicle ferry counters to take the e-Vis card like previously, but only need to renew their bank guarantee or public bond each year," he said.
He added that the e-Vehicle system would be extended to all the JKDM state branches especially on the duty-free island, Pulau Langkawi.
