Audi has released a teaser shot of the new A9 - set to take its position as the new flagship of the company's range. The Audi A9 will also debut a new design direction for the marque when it is fully revealed at the 2014 Los Angeles motor show next month.

Designed at Audi's styling centre in Ingolstadt under the direction of Marc Lichte - the company's head designer, the car appears to be a rather large one, possibly a tad over five metres since the W222 Mercedes-Benz S-Class already measures in at 5,246 mm for the long-wheelbase version.

Marc, who was appointed as head designer in February 2014, has previously worked with the Volkswagen Group - in which he was promoted to Head of the Exterior Design Studio in 2006. His contributions to the company include the Golf (Mk5, Mk6, Mk7), the Passat (Mk6, Mk7, Mk8), the Touareg and the Phaeton.

The Audi A9 is set to ride on the MLB Evo platform and will most probably go on sale in the year 2016 at its earliest. A hotter S9 version would probably follow suit not long after.
