Ferrari has revealed the 488 GTB ahead of a Geneva show debut. This new Gran Turismo Berlinetta receives the baton from the 458 Italia, and introduces turbo power to the equation.
The 488 GTB is powered by a new 3,902 cc twin-turbo V8, not the same as the 3,855 cc forced induced V8 in the California T. Delivering 670 hp at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm, the 488 GTB packs a heavier punch than the 4.5 litre NA V8-powered 597 hp/540 Nm 458 Speciale. 0-100 km/h is done in three seconds, 0-200 km/h in just 8.3 seconds. Top speed is over 330 km/h.
The 458's seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox has been revised and now features what Ferrari calls Variable Torque Management. In the firm's own words, the system "unleashes the engine's massive torque smoothly and powerfully right across the rev range, while specific gear ratios deliver incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle."
Aerodynamics have been massively improved. The 488 has the best efficiency figure for a production Ferrari, the fruit of 50% more downforce than its predecessor and reduced drag.
Elements contributing to this seemingly impossible goal are a double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes and, at the rear, active aerodynamics coupled with a blown spoiler. The latter works in conjunction with an aggressive ramp angle for the diffuser which features active flaps. The 488 GTB's underbody incorporates vortex generators.
Ferrari says that its new creation is its most responsive production model yet, with "razor-sharp response times comparable to those of a track car." It features an evolved version of Ferrari's side slip angle control system (Side Slip Control 2) that's more precise and less invasive, providing greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. Aside from integrating with F1-Trac and E-Diff, SSC2 also now controls the active dampers.
