The new BMW M6 GT3 will be encountering some stiff competition from Stuttgart in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 racer, teased here ahead of its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The racing adaptation of the AMG GT road car is expected to make its competitive debut in 2016, around the same time as its Munich rival.

Only one image has been revealed so far, but we can see a very aggressive front end with an assortment of flicks, scoops and splitters. The toothy grille looks to harken back to the design seen on the 300 SL race cars that won the 1952 Carrera Panamericana.

Power should come a reworked version of the AMG GT's 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8, which in higher-performing GT S trim develops 503 hp and 650 Nm. The car will replace the successful SLS AMG GT3 in Mercedes' customer racing campaign – the latter won the 24 Hours of Nurburgring in 2013, setting a very high bar for its successor to follow.
