Following a sole teaser shot, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 racer has now been unveiled prior to its debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Based on the Mercedes-AMG GT road car, the racer has been designed to comply with the FIA's GT3 racing rules and is due to be delivered to customer race teams at the end of 2015.
"We are entering a hard-fought and hotly contested competitive environment with the new Mercedes-AMG GT3," said Tobias Moers, chairman of Mercedes-AMG. No doubt that one of the cars Moers speaks of is the BMW M6 GT3 racer that will makes its track debut next year.
While looks aren't exactly a priority for a track car, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 does cut quite a menacing figure with its designo matte grey paintwork coupled to a large grille out front and a massive fixed, rear wing out back. The racer, like its road-going brethren, sports an aluminium spaceframe.
A number of measures were undertaken to cut weight from the road-going Mercedes-AMG GT. It includes having the engine cover, doors, front wings, side skirts, rear diffuser and boot lid being fashioned out from carbon-fibre.
Beneath its ventilated hood, the same (albeit reworked) naturally-aspirated 6.3 litre V8 engine from the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 is retained. While power figures remain a mystery, AMG has disclosed that all that power will be transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential racing gearbox. The AMG GT3 racer features double wishbone suspension "made almost entirely from aluminium."
Inside, a roll-cage constructed from high-tensile steel frames the spartan cabin while a carbon-fibre race seat ensures a snug fit for the driver. Elsewhere, a racing steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster replaces the road car's friendlier setup.
