Renault has rolled out the Megane GT 220 range to slot in just below its hallowed RS models. Still pretty fast, the GT 220 Hatch (five-door), Coupe (three-door) and Sport Tourer (wagon) have been worked on by Renaultsport, but aren't full fat RS cars.
Described as "entry-level models to the world of Megane performance driving" the GT 220 is powered by a 2.0 litre engine with 220 hp and 340 Nm at 2,400 rpm, 45 hp/20 Nm down on the RS 265. The turbo unit is paired to a six-speed manual gearbox and pushes the Megane from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. Top speed is 240 km/h. With stop-start as standard, the GT 220 returns 13.7 km/l in the European combined cycle.
The Renaultsport-tuned chassis includes stiffer springs and specific dampers that use the calibration and valving of the Megane RS. Also from its more powerful sibling are the rear bump stops. Steering calibration differs to that of the mainstream Megane to take into account the GT 220's tyres (225/40 R18 Dunlop Sport Maxx TT) and chassis settings.
Braking performance is provided by ventilated 320 mm front discs (up from 280 mm) and 260 mm solid rear discs together with firmer, more progressive servo-assistance from the RS' master cylinder.
The appearance, specification and colour choices for the GT 220 mirror what is available with the GT Line models, including the option of bespoke Malta Blue paintwork with anthracite grey and polished detailing. The door mirror housings are in dark chrome.
In the cabin, RS influence can be seen in the sports seats and upholstery, the thick leather-rimmed steering wheel with thumb indents and stitching detail, the analogue dials and aluminium pedals. The interior door handle pulls, outer air vent surrounds and the dashboard have a polished carbon finish.
