After having its brochure leaked in May and being spied undisguised last month, it's finally here - the 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser's has made its official debut. The J200 has been given yet another partial redesign, and the rework covers aesthetic revisions to both exterior and interior.
Updates include exterior sheet metal with a more modern and aggressive edge - there's a new front mask with a more modern design achieved by restyling the grille, headlamps, bumper, fenders and bonnet. Side protection mouldings and door handles have also been redrawn, while the rear makeover includes a new bumper, upper tailgate panel, combination lamps, reflectors and mudguards.
The facelift also gets two new colours, Copper Brown Mica and Dark Blue Mica (Onyx Blue for Australia), which brings the total palette to nine colours in Japan and 10 for Australia.
The interior, meanwhile, has been revamped with soft-touch surfaces, revised instruments and controls and other refinements. Soft padding has been adopted for areas that directly contact occupants' limbs and support their bodies, with special attention paid to the thickness of materials and the treatment of edges.
Switches and displays for audio, air-conditioning and driver-related functions have been consolidated into logical groupings (by function) while dials and switches have been reshaped to make them easier to use.
Six LED-backlit meters convey the status of the vehicle at a single glance, and a 4.2-inch TFT colour LCD screen is now in the mix. The roof lining is now available in black, seat covers go the semi-aniline leather route and the interior now features four colour choices.
The two V8 engines available for the J200 have been revised, resulting in more power for the twin-turbo diesel and better fuel consumption and tighter Euro 5 emissions for both it and the petrol unit.
The 4.5 litre twin-turbo diesel gains new injectors, revised mapping and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) fitted with a guard to protect it over rough roads. Power output has been increased to 268 hp while torque remains at 650 Nm.
The 4.6 litre petrol V8 retains its 304 hp and 439 Nm output, but the air-injection system has been adapted to reduce emissions by inducing secondary air through the exhaust ports for faster catalyst warm-up from a cold start.
The facelift also debuts a suite of new driver assistance features, with the Toyota Safety Sense P active safety package available as standard on all grades of the Land Cruiser. The package is a higher-spec version of the Toyota Safety Sense C package that debuted earlier this year on the Corolla in Japan.
The package includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, radar cruise control (with brake control), lane departure alert and an automatic high beam system. There's also a panoramic multi-terrain monitor to help assess conditions all around the vehicle, and there's even an under-floor view, a world's first.
It's not the only world's first item on board - another debutant is a front-view rotating display. Other tech novelties include blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and a tyre pressure warning system.
