BMW Malaysia has announced that it will be working together with GreenTech Malaysia to offer its BMW i8 customers access to public charging services and facilities over the coming year. The announcement of the strategic partnership was made at the launch of GreenTech's ChargEV public electric vehicle charging station network.
The company's head of corporate communications, Sashi Ambi, said that technology in the automotive industry was at the tipping point of change, especially with regards to mobility of the future. "The key strategy for the nation to move towards sustainable mobility within the urban environment is through industry-wide cooperation."
"This includes ensuring the necessary infrastructure to support the new technology to increase consumer confidence in the viability of electric vehicles and plug-in-hybrid vehicles," he said.
Ambi added that the success of electric vehicles and plug-in-hybrid vehicles also lies in the easy availability of mobility services, from simple home charging facilities to the ease of using a continually-expanding network of charging stations in the public space.
With ChargEV playing a pivotal role in encouraging the adoption of EVs, BMW Malaysia says it believes that consumer awareness and education is the subsequent part of the equation for electro-mobility initiatives in the country, adding that technological knowledge for after-sales support and the involvement of original equipment manufacturers will also play a vital role in the development.
