McLaren has just announced that Bruno Senna is going to be the official mentor for the McLaren P1 GTR Driver Programme. His role would be to extract maximum performance for each of the cars as well as the drivers, around some of the world's most iconic and challenging circuits.
It has been a long road for Senna, as his career in Formula 1 never really hit the heights that everyone expected him to achieve. Stints with HRT, Renault and Williams were all quite lacklustre, and it's perhaps fitting that McLaren took it upon themselves to resurrect this talented individual.
Senna is already part of the McLaren GT factory driver programme, where he will be directly involved in the development of the 650S GT3 and 650S Sprint. Racing the 650S GT3 in selected events will also be part of his job description. Therefore, making him the mentor for McLaren P1 GTR driving programme really does make perfect sense.
"The bespoke Driver Programme has been designed to ensure each driver is prepared, mentally and physically, to make the most of the car and the track. The stages are the same as a professional racing driver would go through for a race weekend, whether it is a GT race or in Formula 1, and the team on the ground at each event will be working closely with the drivers to hone skill levels and push them beyond what they believe is possible," said Bruno, nephew of Ayrton.
The drivers will have access to the McLaren racing simulator in order to familiarize themselves with the circuits, and so far, nine provisional tracks have been selected, such as Circuit de Catalunya (Spain), Sepang International Circuit (Malaysia), Circuit of the Americas (North America), Silverstone (UK), Autodromo Nazionale Monza (Italy), Red Bull Ring (Austria), Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Bahrain International Circuit (Bahrain) and Yas Marina (Abu Dhabi).
