The Road Charges (RC) registration period, in relation to the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), of foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia will have to be extended beyond the earlier specified window of two weeks, The Star reports. This is to allow the authorities to rectify numerous issues that have surfaced over the weekend. Registration, to be conducted exclusively online, begun on August 15.
According to Datuk Hasni Mohammad, chairman of Johor Public Works, Rural and Regional Development Committee, the VEP implementation date set for October 1 will proceed but online registration "must be extended beyond August 31." The Road Transport Department (JPJ) would require extra time to address the issues regarding registration - feedback shows that the forms were not user-friendly and ambiguous.
"The two weeks may not be enough. There is no point in rushing to register everyone," he added. As of now, it is still unclear as to exactly how many individuals have signed up since online registration only begun two days ago. All vehicles will be required to register under the Road Charges (RC) with the JPJ, failing which they might be refused entry into Malaysia. A fee of RM10 is imposed for the RC, which is valid for five years.
While all foreign vehicles need to be registered, government vehicles, motorcycles, public buses and taxis will be exempted from the RM20 VEP fee. Upon registration, a radio frequency identification (RFID) card will be issued to owners and must be renewed upon expiry or when the owner buys a new car.
