Joining the Skoda CitiJet roadster this year at the GTI Treffen in Worthersee on May 28 is the Skoda Yeti Xtreme, a muscled-up crossover concept inspired by rally cars.

The makeover starts on the outside, where the recently-facelifted Yeti receives a large front air intake, aggressive front and rear bumper guards, bulky wheel arch extensions, dual exhaust outlets and a fluorescent yellow finish for the roof and 17-inch alloy wheels shod with chunky off-road tyres.

Inside, occupants sit on four Recaro bucket seats with four-point harnesses and rest their feet on aluminium floor panels. There is a "Super Sport" steering wheel with paddle shifters, carbon fibre trim, rally car accessories such as a belt cutter, shovel and fire extinguisher, as well a full-size spare tyre in the boot. But it's not all serious and stripped bare inside – there's an iPad cradle built into the top of the dashboard.

Powering the Yeti Xtreme is a fairly modest 1.8 litre TSI four-cylinder engine delivering 150 hp and 250 Nm to all four wheels through a six-speed DSG transmission. 0-100 km/h is done in 9.0 seconds and the top speed is 192 km/h.

"We are going to strengthen the emotional vibrancy of the brand," said Skoda board member of sales and marketing Werner Eichhorn. "Skoda Yeti Xtreme – as a dynamic and powerful compact SUV concept – demonstrates the brand's strong expertise in four-wheel drive technology, as well as our know-how when it comes to rally sports."
