Official images of the W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate have been released. The long-roofed version of the fourth-generation compact executive sedan has been spotted undisguised before, but this is our first proper look at it.
As with the sedan, the estate has grown substantially over its predecessor, spanning 96 mm longer at 4,702 mm and 40 mm wider at 1,810 mm, with the wheelbase now up 80 mm to 2,840 mm. Despite this, weight has actually dropped by up to 65 kg thanks to an aluminium content of 49%.
The exterior is as you would expect, being identical to the sedan from the B-pillars forward, but the estate does get wider E-Class-style tail lights that this writer prefers.
The increased dimensions bring manifold benefits to interior space and practicality, the new car getting more shoulder room, elbow room and headroom over the W204. Rear-seat passengers in particular receive the biggest gains with a generous 45 mm increase in legroom, while luggage volume increases by five litres to 490 litres.
If that's not enough, you can unlatch the rear seats (now split 40:20:40, instead of 60:40 previously) electrically to fold them flat, increasing boot capacity to 1,510 litres, ten more than before. Optional features include an Easy Pack powered tailgate, as well as a Hands-Free Access system that enables you to open the tailgate by waving your foot under the rear bumper in a manner similar to Ford and BMW systems.
The estate will be powered by the same range engines as on the sedan, with four four-cylinder turbodiesels making between 115 hp and 204 hp as well as four petrol engines (three four-cylinder mills, one V6) with outputs ranging from 156 hp to 333 hp.
A C 300 BlueTEC Hybrid diesel with 204 hp plus 27 hp from the electric motor is also available, while a plug-in C 350 Hybrid with a 208 hp petrol four plus a 67 hp electric motor will arrive in due course.
