Here are the first spyshots of the upcoming Jaguar XE pounding the Nurburgring, a circuit that no carmaker can afford to skip during development. The XE, when it debuts later this year, will challenge the F30 BMW 3 Series, W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class and ageing B8 Audi A4, among other compact execs. Jaguar has been absent in this segment since the demise of the Mondeo-based X-Type.
Earlier this month, Jaguar uploaded a teaser image of the XE with a "hollow" body wrap, "revealing" the car's structure under the sheet metal. The XE name was confirmed in March this year, along with a preview of the sedan's face, which is standard modern Jag. We've also seen the XE's new "iQ AI" platform, but nothing much else.
A similiar engine line-up to that found in the Jaguar XF is possible, with the entry-level served by a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit. But instead of the current Ford-sourced engine in the XF, the XE will debut a new 2.0 litre turbo-four from Jaguar Land Rover's new Ingenium engine family.
