The Fiat 500X has been officially revealed at the 2014 Paris motor show. Official photos of the car were leaked prior to its release in September but the final product is now out in the open for everyone to see.
It now adds another variant to Fiat's 500 portfolio which consists of the original 500, the 500C, a 500L and several others. The 500X will be built at the updated SATA plant in Melfi and is targeted for sale in more than 100 countries.
Two distinct variants are available - a regular 500X and a 'metropolitan' version. Fiat has positioned the metropolitan version to specifically cater to a younger, more urban-centric customer base. The regular 500X, we presume, would be bought by individuals who prefer to do a fair bit of light off-roading.
Further helping to tackle the urban jungle, the Fiat 500X measures in at 4,250 mm in length, 1,800 mm wide and 1,610 mm in height. A total of 12 different liveries are available to choose from while eight different designs are present for 16, 17, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Boot space comes in at 350 litres.
At launch, three engine variants will be made available with five more options to follow in the near future. Petrol options available now are the 1.4 litre Turbo Multiair II with 140 hp, a 1.6 litre Multiair II producing 120 hp, a 2.0 litre Multijet II with 140 hp.
Following that, a 1.6 litre 'E-torQ' powerplant with 110 hp, a 1.4 litre Turbo Multiair II with 170 hp and the most powerful option, a 2.4 litre Tigershark unit with 184 hp. In total, six petrol engines will be made available for customers.
As for diesel lovers, a 1.3 litre Multijet II engine producing 95 hp and a 2.0 litre Multijet II with 140 hp are made available. The Fiat 500X is also the first Fiat to feature a nine-speed automatic transmission. It features a "shift-on-the-fly" mapping and comes with the availability to switch to a manual-sequential mode.
A four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive option comes with the new Fiat 500X. Along with the Jeep Renegade, the Fiat 500X features the ability to disconnect its rear axle seamlessly, allowing the switch from four to two-wheel drive when it isn't necessary.
Like most modern cars, a system which controls the engine, brakes, steering and transmission are present - dubbed 'Drive Mood Selector'. Three maps are programmed, 'Sport', 'All weather' and 'Auto'. On the other version of the 500X, the all weather mode is replaced by a 'Traction' feature.
Safety wise, the car is equipped with six airbags, headlights with LED daytime running lights, fog lights with cornering function and ESC. 'Lane Assist', 'Blind Spot Assist', 'Brake Control' and reverse camera are options or come as standard depending on individual markets.
Inside, the car comes with either a 5-inch of 6.5-inch touchscreen system with Bluetooth interface, Aux-in capabilities and a USB/SD port. The 5-inch option comes with a TomTom 2.5D navigation system while the 6-inch variant features satellite navigation with 3D maps and voice command location input.
An eco mode option allows drivers to save up to 16% of fuel costs and reduce C02 emissions. For audiophiles, an exclusive Beats Hi-Fi system is available on request. Launched on the 500L, the system was designed in collaboration with Beats by Dr. Dre.
