Beginning next year, and with the cooperation of several other parties, the Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) will construct between 125 and 150 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by 2017, according to a Berita Harian report.
Locations include the North-South and East-West highways, KL city centre and other areas of focus in line with making Malaysia an EV-friendly country, MAI CEO Madani Sahari revealed to the daily. He added that the RM150 million fund under the latest National Automotive Policy (NAP 2014) will be used for this purpose.
"(Translated) MAI estimates costs of RM50,000 per charging station. Therefore, with NAP 2014's RM150 million fund, we can in fact build even more charging stations around the country by 2020," BH quoted him as saying.
Meanwhile, more details on the locally-assembled E-Bus - Madani told BH that the first prototype is due in August 2015. The electric bus will have a 70% local parts content to start with and will be produced by a local company that's currently in the process of expanding its production facility.
The MAI CEO also said that SME Bank's RM70 million Sustainable Mobility Fund recently announced in Budget 2015 will accelerate EV growth in Malaysia, including production and construction of infrastructure.
