While the leaked pictures of the European-market B8 Volkswagen Passat (or, more accurately, the China-only long-wheelbase Magotan) are still fresh on our minds, our European spies have managed to capture this video of the next-generation D-segment sedan and Variant estate in action.

The B8 will be the first all-new Passat since the B6 was launched in 2005 – the current B7, around since 2010, is a heavily-facelifted model – riding on VW Group's modular MQB transverse-layout architecture.

As we have seen in the leaks, the cars in the video feature a sleeker, more modern appearance, with angular headlights (the Variant on test was fitted with full LED headlights, the sedan making do with regular halogen reflectors), an almost CC-like low-slung roofline, door-mounted side mirrors (these are becoming a trend within the VW Group) and dual trapezoidal exhaust outlets.

Technical details are not known at the moment, but the B8 Volkswagen Passat will almost certainly feature the company's typical range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 litres, with a choice of manual and DSG transmissions and the option of 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The new car is expected to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.
