On show at the 2015 Bangkok International Motor Show is the Toyota Corolla Altis ESport Nurburgring Edition – a really odd special edition for a sedate front-wheel drive sedan with a CVT, but there is a teeny tiny bit of credence to it.
The car commemorates Toyota Team Thailand's seventh place class finish at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring last year, where it raced the Altis in the SP3 class (naturally-aspirated engines with displacements between 1,750 and 2,000 cc). Sounds like quite an achievement until you realise there were only seven finishers in the class, which meant it came in last (and second-to-last overall, in 109th place)...
But never mind that, let's focus on the special edition model, shall we? To be built in limited numbers, the Nurburgring Edition comes with an aggressive bodykit with large splitters on either side of the front bumper, deeper side skirts and a diffuser-like insert on the rear bumper – the latter two are similar to the optional aerokit available locally.
There's also new side protector mouldings, a sizeable rear spoiler and Nürburgring decals on the front fenders, while the interior features a smattering of red trim and black leather upholstery with red stitching. The suspension has been retuned for better handling, but otherwise the mechanicals remain unmolested – a 1.8 litre Dual VVT-i four-pot sends 141 PS and 177 Nm to the front wheels via the aforementioned CVT.
The Toyota Corolla Altis ESport Nurburgring Edition will go on sale in the Land of Smiles in April, with prices starting at 949,000 baht (RM107,920) for the Black Mica model – those who want the privilege of having White Pearl paint will instead have to fork out 959,000 baht (RM109,058).
