What if Sir/Madam wanted an ultra-luxury car that drove well, had the space of a sedan but the looks of a coupe and also offered the option to drop its top at a moment's notice? Rolls-Royce has got the answer, it would seem, as spyshots of the Rolls-Royce Wraith Drophead Coupe have begun to crop up.
As development work on the droptop version of the most driver-oriented Roller shifts into high gear, our European carparazzi team have managed to photograph a heavily-camouflaged prototype slipping and sliding about in the snow as it undergoes winter testing.
Despite the camouflage, one can easily spot the sloping roofline of the Wraith that is aped on this particular mule - a hardtop is in place of where the soft-top should be à la Phantom Drophead Coupe. Elsewhere, it's the same story with the trademark front grille taking centre stage and the rear featuring twin, squared-off exhaust outlets and chunky, one-piece tail lamps.
Mechanicals are expected to be shared with the Rolls-Royce Wraith. That would mean a 6.6 litre, twin-turbo V12 engine with 624 hp and 800 Nm of torque coupled to a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. Employed in the Wraith, said combo allows for a 0-100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.
While we've christened the upcoming convertible as the Wraith Drophead Coupe, don't be surprised to see it debut with a completely alien tag - the name 'Corniche' has a nice ring according to senior members of the firm. The fact that the Wraith wasn't named the Ghost Coupe further hints at the notion.
Whatever it may end up being called, the general public can expect the new model to debut no earlier than the middle of next year. Now, we wonder how much would it cost to run one in Malaysia...
