Set to debut at the 2015 Geneva show in a few days' time is the Volvo V60 D5 Twin Engine Special Edition, of which only 500 examples will be built before a 'regular' version hits the market in the spring.
Using the same configuration as the V60 D6 Twin Engine (the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid), the V60 D5 Twin Engine delivers 163 hp via the combustion engine and about 67 hp from an electric motor that's fed by a 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery.
The 163 hp is consistent with the D4 engine (2.0 litres), which would make sense since the D6 Twin Engine's internal combustion component is a D5 engine (2.4 litres). The D6 Twin Engine sees the diesel engine drive the front wheels and the electric motor drive the rear wheels; it should be the same story here.
Total system output is approximately 230 hp and over 600 Nm of torque, which is 55 hp and 40 Nm down on the D6 pioneer. Pure, Hybrid and Power drive modes are available, as well as a Save function.
In Pure, the car relies on electric drive as much as possible, with a 50 km electric-only range. Hybrid is the default setting - the diesel engine and electric motor work together to achieve staggering NEDC numbers of 1.8 litres per 100 km and 48 grams CO2 per km. Power, as the name suggests, utilises the technology for maximum thrust, pushing the car to 100 km/h from rest in nine seconds (D6 Twin Engine 6.9 seconds).
Additionally, the Save function allows the drive to conserve battery charge for use later on, for instance in towns, where stop-go driving is commonplace. If necessary, the high-voltage generator will charge the battery. Meanwhile, charging from a 230V outlet takes 3.5 hours at 16A, 4.5 hours at 10A and 7.5 hours at 6A.
There's a 'pre-conditioning while charging' feature - while the car is being charged at the post, you can pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin so that you enter into immediate comfort. This also ensures more energy is available for actually propelling the car.
The pre-conditioning function can also cool the batteries for optimised efficiency, and there are two heating systems - one electrically-driven, the other diesel-powered.
Exterior-wise, this Special Edition comes with Crystal White paint, 19-inch wheels and gloss black elements. Inside, you'll find black headlining, piano black trim and Blond-upholstered sports seats with white stitching.
'Twin Engine' is Volvo's name for hybrid powertrains under the Drive-E umbrella. The Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine brings together a twin-charged 2.0 litre petrol four-cylinder and an electric motor for a combined output of 400 hp and 640 Nm of torque - and it's coming to Malaysia!
