Audi has announced a new entry-level Audi TT 1.8 TFSI, available in both coupe and roadster forms. The 1.8 litre turbo four-cylinder engine makes 180 hp and 250 Nm of torque, the latter available in a broad 1,250 to 5,000 rpm range.
Entry-level it may be, but performance is very decent - the TT 1.8 TFSI Coupe goes from 0-100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds with a six-speed manual gearbox and 7.0 seconds for the six-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission. Top speed is 241 km/h.
Figures for the Roadster are 7.2 seconds (manual), 7.3 seconds (S tronic) and 237 km/h max. Claimed fuel consumption for the 1.8 TFSI range is from 7.0 to 7.7 litres per 100 km.
Audi says that at part loads, an additional manifold injection system supplements the FSI direct injection to cut emissions. The Audi valvelift system varies the stroke of the exhaust valves, improving the engine's response. A compact rotary valve module for thermal management and the exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head both play a major part in the engine's efficiency.
The 1.8 TFSI joins the current third-generation TT range which has a FWD-only 2.0 litre TDI with 184 hp and 380 Nm, and a 2.0 litre TFSI with 230 hp and 370 Nm, available in FWD or quattro. The top for now TTS quattro uses the same petrol engine, but tuned to produce 310 hp and 380 Nm. The 1.8 TFSI will be available in Europe from July.
