VLT expressed in percentages; the lower the number, the darker the tint
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will enforce the new window tinting regulations starting this Friday, marking the end of a six-month postponement, according to Harian Metro.
The new rules specify minimum permissible visible light transmission (VLT) levels of 70% for the front windscreen, 50% for the front side windows and 30% for all other windows (rear side windows and rear screen), as opposed to the current 50% for all side windows and rear windscreen.
Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad, JPJ director-general, said that the authorities will not hesitate in nabbing drivers who fail to comply with the new ruling in future operations.
"These six months that were given are sufficient, and there are no excuses after the enforcement date beginning this Friday," he said. "Owners who fail to obey with these regulations will be fined according the tint standards set by JPJ."
According to Ismail Ahmad, JPJ was supposed to have begun enforcement on November 1, but it postponed the date to May 1 after studying the various consumer needs. "The six-month period that was given is long enough for owners to perform inspections and change their window tints according to the new VLT rates that were specified," he said.
He added that JPJ has so far only given tint approvals to 3,500 vehicles involving celebrities and other individuals for safety as well as health reasons – the latter requires confirmation from health professionals.
