Perodua, powered by the strong-selling Axia, is on a roll. Sales for the first quarter that ended on March 31 jumped 30% year-on-year to 57,200 units from 44,024 units in Q1 2014. The Rawang-based carmaker also posted its highest monthly sales record in March by shifting 22,500 units.
Based on P2's estimated total industry volume of 65,500 units in March, it would have accounted for 34% share of the market. The strong performance was fuelled by strong demand for the Axia, which has collected over 100,000 bookings since mid-August 2014. As of March 31, Perodua has delivered over 60,000 units of Malaysia's most affordable car.
"Our other models were also well received with the Myvi registering 8,400 units. We also believe that the strong demand for cars in March was also due to consumers looking to register their cars before the implementation of the GST," said Perodua president and CEO Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh.
After-sales is a big income generator for carmakers, and here, P2 saw a 14% increase in revenue to RM84 million for Q1 2015, year-on-year. Revenue comes mainly from vehicle maintenance services, lubricants as well as body and paint operations.
Perodua also recorded a growth of 2% in the sales of parts and accessories, raking in RM61.8 million in Q1. Earlier this month, P2 launched the GearUp brand of bodykits and interior accessories. Now available for both Axia Standard and SE styles, a range of add-ons will also be introduced for the Myvi and Alza in the near future.
It's a case of so far, so good for the market leader, which is on track for a record breaking 2015. "Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to achieve our sales target of 208,000 units. We also foresee Perodua meeting its revenue targets of RM306 million from our vehicle maintenance services, lubricants and body and paint operations, as well as RM258.9 million from our parts and accessories business," Aminar announced.
Last year, Perodua sold 195,600 vehicles and posted revenues of RM303.4 million for its after-sales operations as well as RM243.7 million for the parts and accessories business.
