Down under in Australia, Toyota has revealed the rejuvenated Aurion (the Camry, for us Malaysians) for the year 2015. However, unlike its cousin, the 2015 Toyota Camry, changes are a lot less notable with only slightly reworked styling, a streamlined range and updated prices and specifications.
Assembled at Toyota's Altona plant in Melbourne alongside the Camry, the 2015 Toyota Aurion sports a much more restrained look compared to the pre-facelift variant - so much so that even the Malaysian-spec Camry models appear to have had more work done on them externally. So what exactly has changed, then?
As mentioned, the range has now been trimmed to include only three variants of the Aurion - the entry-level AT-X, the middle-child Sportivo and the range-topping Presara. The Aurion Prodigy and sportier ZR6 variants have been terminated. All three variants are powered by a sole engine choice.
Under the bonnet, a 3.5 litre 2GR-FE V6 mill pumps out a total of 268 hp at 6,200 rpm and 336 Nm of torque at 4,700 rpm. Power goes to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission while fuel consumption on the combined cycle is rated at 10.8 km/l. CO2 emissions stand at 215 g/km.
One new addition is the adoption of a "pre-load differential", said to improve drivability by providing increased steering feedback. Improved stability during high-speed and (light) off-road jaunts are also touted as a result, along with easier low-speed manoeuvrability.
The base AT-X model receives 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights along with front and rear parking sensors as standard. Inside, keyless entry and push-start button capabilities are included, along with black fabric upholstery, dual-zone air-conditioning, cruise control, a reverse camera, electric driver's seat, Optitron gauges with a 4.2-inch cluster display and a 6.1-inch infotainment system with ToyotaLink.
Climbing up to the Sportivo variant adds on a bodykit, gloss black 18-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps and a performance-oriented suspension setup. Stepping inside will reveal a set of front scuff plates, sports pedals, black "sports" fabric upholstery and a mesh-like interior trim. Additionally, the AT-X includes paddle shifters, a pair of sports seats up front (both electrically-operated) and an electric rear sunshade.
Finally, the luxury-oriented Presara variant receives 17-inch alloys, LED headlamps with auto high beam, automatic wipers and auto-dipping side mirrors to ease parking manoeuvres. Inside, a seven-inch touchscreen with a ten-speaker JBL sound system takes precedence while an electro-chromatic rearview mirror, moonroof and electric front seats (driver with memory function) further sets it apart from the rest.
Owners will offered a choice of either a black or ivory-schemed leather upholstery to match the dark wood grain interior trim. The Presara adds on blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert and lane departure warning. All in all, a price increase of AU$450 (RM1,268) to AU$50,440 (RM142,137) is marked for the Presara.
The base AT-X and Sportivo variants are priced at AU$36,490 (RM102,827) and AU$40,990 (RM115,507), respectively. As a result, the Presara variant is the only model that receives a price increase with Toyota commenting that the inclusion of metallic paint (AU$450) is reason enough to price the car as such.
