Local Chevrolet Camaro fans eager for the all-new 2016 model to arrive in right-hand drive form, Ford Mustang-style, will be disappointed to find that the sixth-gen pony car will once again be only available in LHD for now, according to CarAdvice.
"The Chevrolet Camaro is an iconic product and the sixth-generation all-new vehicle will offer even higher levels of performance, technology and refinement. However, a RHD variant is not in the current plan," a spokeswoman of General Motors' Australian brand Holden said. "If this was to change, Holden would of course take a very close look at this exciting car."
By contrast, the aforementioned Mustang, also now in its sixth generation, will be available in right-hand drive for the first time, with sales starting in the UK in the autumn – we'll get ours early next year, offered with a choice of either a 310 hp/433 Nm 2.3 litre EcoBoost turbo four-pot or the full-on 435 hp/541 Nm 5.0 litre V8.
The move (which follows a similar announcement about the new Volt plug-in hybrid) comes as no surprise, given that Chevrolet is canning sales in many major European markets – including the UK – in light of poor sales and a struggling economy. Halo models like the Camaro will continue to be sold there, but the brand's reduced presence probably means that right-hand drive development is even less of a priority now.
It's not just Europe that has affected Chevy's plans worldwide – it announced earlier this year that it is stopping production of the Spin MPV in Indonesia and the Sonic in Thailand to reposition itself as a pickup/SUV-oriented brand in the region, as part of GM's global restructuring.
