We've already seen spyshots of the 2016 smart fortwo cabrio running about with nary a hint of camouflage earlier last month. This time round, it appears that the petite hatch is out to put its electronically-operated fabric roof to the test as additional shots of the prototype have surfaced, aptly showing the car running about in poor weather conditions.
As mentioned, the roof mechanism is expected to be carried over from its predecessor while on the aesthetic front, things are likely to mirror its coupe sibling with the addition of a mesh-like front grille and more block-like head and taillights. The overall result is pretty positive, with a chunkier stance providing a more ground-hugging outlook for the third-generation city car.
Based on the Renault Twingo, the 2016 smart fortwo cabrio is expected to feature dimensions similar to that of its fixed-roof sibling with a length of 2,690 mm and a width of 1,660 mm. In terms of height, however, expect it to differ marginally due to the makeup of its roof - the coupe stands at 1,550 mm.
Under the skin, the fortwo cabrio will most definitely carry over the same options offered on the hardtop variant. That equates to a base 1.0 litre, three-cylinder engine with 60 PS and 91 Nm of torque. Moving up the range will nab buyers a similar mill with more power, this time with 72 PS and 91 Nm of twist while the range-topping model will come equipped with a 898cc turbocharged engine with 91 PS and 135 Nm.
All three rear-mounted engines are mated to a choice of either a five-speed manual or a six-speed Twinamic six-speed dual-clutch transmission with drive going to the rear wheels. Safety features appear to be fairly generous as well with the inclusion of five airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners, Crosswind Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.
The 2016 smart fortwo cabrio is expected to make its debut at the upcoming 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Nothing concrete in terms of prices yet but word on the vine is that one will probably have to pay a £1,500 (RM8,395) premium over the fixed-roof variant.
