Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that global production of its CX-5 crossover has surpassed the one million barrier at the end of April 2015 - making it the second quickest model to hit said mark following the Mazda 3 (Mazda Axela in Japan). It has taken only three years and five months to reach said milestone since production commenced in November 2011 at Mazda's Ujina plant in Hiroshima, Japan.
Production of the Mazda CX-5 - the first model to feature the marque's Kodo design language, by the way - has since then been expanded to include locations such as China, Russia, Vietnam and Malaysia. "I would like to express my gratitude to the people all over the world who have appreciated and supported the CX-5," commented Mazda CX-5 programme manager, Masashi Otsuka.
"We are committed to continue enhancing this model into the future to ensure that it remains a popular choice among people with active lifestyles, and will appeal to even more customers in the future," he added. The coveted crossover has bagged more than 60 awards since going on sale in the global market in 2012, including the Car of the Year Japan 2012/2013 award.
On the local front, the Mazda CX-5 facelift was introduced to the Malaysian market earlier this month. The rejuvenated C-segment crossover goes on sale in fully-imported form (CBU) and carries a price tag of RM167,610 for the two-wheel drive variant - the all-wheel model is priced at RM177,610. Both prices are quoted as on-the-road sans insurance.
Mechanicals remain pretty much the same for the sole 2.5 litre model on sale (184 hp/250 Nm), as is the case with its exterior bar a few enhancements. The interior, on the other hand, receives the MZD Connect infotainment system. Said setup features a seven-inch touchscreen, with additional controls handled by a rotary Multimedia Commander knob.
