Peugeot has brought a surprise to Auto Shanghai in the form of quite possibly the maddest hot hatch in history, the Peugeot 308 R HYbrid. As the name suggests, it's based on Frankfurt 2013's 308 R concept, but there's a whole lot more to it than that.
As with the earlier concept (and RCZ R), the HYbrid features a Prince 1.6 litre THP engine boosted to 270 hp, but this time it is mated via a six-speed transmission with paddle shifters to two electric motors (one on each axle, providing all-wheel drive), each producing 115 hp. Combined, they punch out an incredible 500 hp and 730 Nm.
This enables the HYbrid to rocket to 100 km/h in four seconds flat before hitting the electronic limiter at 250 km/h, despite being capable of producing carbon dioxide emissions of just 70 grams per kilometre.
Maximum performance is only available only in all-out Hot Lap mode; there's also a Track mode limiting output to 400 hp and 530 Nm (using both the engine and rear motor, with the front motor boosting acceleration when needed), Road mode with 300 hp and 400 Nm (mostly from engine, with rear motor playing a supporting role; front motor is disengaged) and full-electric ZEV mode.
To keep power in check on the road, both front and rear track have been widened by 80 mm, while the 19-inch wheels are shod with 235/35 tyres. Brakes are 380 mm ventilated discs (with four-piston callipers) in front, and 290 mm discs at the rear.
However, the car can use regenerative braking throughout the whole speed range, charging the 3 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery can also be recharged either by using the engine to drive the front electric motor to serve as a generator, or by plugging up to a rapid charging terminal that fills up the battery in just 45 minutes.
