The 2016 Toyota Fortuner, based on the new Hilux, is "just a few months away," revealed Toyota Thailand at the launch of its latest pick-up truck. We already know what the seven-seat SUV will look like, of course, thanks to a few leaked photos from earlier this year.
When arrives, you can expect it to share the same range of new engines that are offered on the new Hilux. On the diesel front, the 2.8 litre 1GD-FTV and 2.4 litre 2GD-FTV from the GD family should take over from the current 2.5 and 3.0 litre options. The 2.7 litre petrol engine, meanwhile, will be a newer Dual VVT-i unit.
Gone, too, will be the four-speed automatic transmission, replaced by a brand new six-speed auto'box. A six-speed manual option (iMT6 with rev-match function, no less) should be available as well, but don't count on it being offered here in Malaysia.
Inside, the next-gen Fortuner is expected to mirror the new Hilux rather closely, with a much more car-like dashboard and interior amenities thrown in. The pick-up truck already boasts much improved interior space and refinement, which will be put to good use by its passenger-oriented SUV cousin.
