The SsangYong XAV concept, unveiled at the 2015 Seoul Motor Show, is set to preview the Korean automaker's next step in terms of its design language. Dubbed the 'eXciting Authentic SUV, the show car comes powered by a 1.6 litre engine coupled to an e-AWD system that is made up of front- and rear-mounted electric motors - juice is provided by a lithium-ion battery.
Additionally, the SSangYong XAV concept features a Smart Motion Control system which is comprised of an Electronic Air Suspension and Stereo Vision functions - designed to increase driving comfort of rough roads. The show car also receives run-flat tyres as a nod to safety.
In terms of its looks, it's hard to pin the SsangYong XAV down as it does sport a number of unorthodox aesthetic cues such as the bluff front end that features a "shoulder wing grille design." Down below sits a large metallic skid plate that helps to further emphasise its tough-as-nails persona.
Overall, its box-like shape is said to draw copious amounts of inspiration from the Korando while at the same time providing plenty of space on the inside. The rear end follows suit with an equally chunky outlook replete with tail lamp assemblies that are integrated into the upper half while an oversized bumper, with twin exhaust outlets embedded into it, completes the look.
As opposed to how most SUVs are styled, the XAV concept ditches the spare tyre and auxiliary fuel tank for added luggage capacity to store "emergency tools and equipment for outdoor activities." Inside, practicality takes precedence with the inclusion of multiple storage spaces and bucket seats.
Should the SSangYong XAV concept see the light of production, expect it to join the ranks of the SsangYong Tivoli as part of a rejuvenated line-up. SsangYong's "commitment to becoming a global SUV maker" could only serve to further encourage such a move.
