In a push to improve connectivity to its KL-Padang Besar Electric Train Service (ETS), KTM says it is looking to collaborate with regional and local low-cost airlines flying to the northern region, Bernama reports.
The rail operator said to fully utilise the ETS, it will be offering door-to-door service to airline passengers commuting to their destinations in order to attract more domestic and international tourists.
"This is a strategic alliance and a win-win arrangement that we hope to achieve in order to increase ridership and at the same time to jointly promote our services to international passengers across the region," KTM president Lt Kol (Rtd) Sarbini Tijan told the national news agency.
The move is targeting to fill up trains during the off-peak period from Monday to Thursday. "The only way to have more people using our services is to bring in local and foreign tourists to use our ETS services during such periods," he said.
Sarbini added that KTM will also improve the connectivity between its stations and the local public transport service providers. "We are working with the bus and local taxi operators and even tourist agencies for them to offer their customers a connected service to their destinations," he said.
He said that over the July 11-25 period, more than 12,000 ETS tickets for the route had been sold, which was very encouraging. He added that KTM was planning to introduce free WiFi onboard for all its passengers and is also set to launch a mobile application service for passengers to be able to buy their tickets on-the-go.
