The Penang Island City Council (MBBP) will increase the fines for parking offences involving the abuse of handicap (OKU) lots, pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes come August 1, according to a report by theSun. The decision was made following numerous complaints on irresponsible drivers by other motorists.
Council Financial Management Committee alternate chairman and city council councillor, Joseph Ng, went on to state that a number of said complaints originated from disabled motorists themselves who were sounding off on the issue of reserved parking spaces abused by able-bodied drivers.
"There is no point in having pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes if they cannot be used as people parked on them," he Ng told members of the media at a press conference following a council meeting. Starting tomorrow, drivers who are found guilty of parking their vehicles in handicap lots, on walkways and bicycle lanes will face a fine of RM100 - an increase of RM70.
Errant motorcyclists will also be penalised a total of RM20 for similar offences - up from the previous fine of RM15. However, it should be noted that the move was met with a fair bit of resistance with councillor Lim Boon Beng calling for the increase to be reconsidered.
