You may remember that last Friday, social media users shared photos of an alleged crack on an MRT guideway over a section of Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong (LDP) – which MRT Corp denied, saying that it was the joining of netting. Now it seems the committee is looking to take action against those who propagated the images, by lodging a police report on the matter.
Director of strategic communications and public relations Mahmood Abdul Razak was the one who made the report – he said that the company decided to make the move because it took the allegations seriously, adding that it will also lodge a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
"There were posts which talked about the supposed 'crack.' But what was of greater concern were posts from people claiming to be experienced engineers who said the guideway was going to collapse at any time and urged people to stay away from the LDP," he said.
Mahmood also mentioned that these supposedly experienced engineers created the impression that they were part of the Klang Valley MRT project, adding that "this is causing a lot of panic among road users."
He said that MRT Corp understood the public's concern and investigated the claims immediately. "We immediately issued a media release explaining that the 'crack' was an optical illusion and was actually a seam line of the netting which was covering the guideway. The media release was issued on the evening of July 23 immediately after the picture of the supposed "crack" became viral," he said.
Additionally, Mahmood reiterated what MRT Corp stated on Friday, saying that the guideway structure over the LDP was sound and had absolutely no risk of collapsing. He also urged motorists not to be "unduly worried" while driving under the guideway, adding that the allegations had no truth.
"The netting covering certain sections of the guideway was put there because stressing work is being carried out for the guideway," he said. "This work may result in some small pieces of material falling. The netting is to prevent such material from landing on vehices and road users below. These works are normal works for the construction of the MRT guideway."
