The upcoming Hyundai 'IP' MPV could be receiving parts from the recently-unveiled Hyundai Creta, the Grand i10 and the Elite i20, according to a report on IndianAutosBlog. The new MPV will not share the same platform as the Creta however, but will instead be built on a different base that costs less. The MPV is slated to be launched in 2017.
It's rumoured to be powered by either a 1.4 litre MPi petrol or CRDi engine - the same ones found in the Hyundai Verna. Larger 1.6 litre petrol and diesel variants might be introduced at a later stage when plans for the IP solidify.
Hyundai has been toying with the idea of a multi-purpose vehicle for quite some time now. We first saw it in the form of the Hyundai Hexa Space concept (pictured here) that made its debut at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi. It sits on the ix20 platform, and is able to sit up to eight, passengers and driver included.
Similarly, Hyundai has also stated that it is working on a new mini SUV in the hopes of overtaking Maruti Suzuki, the country's top auto maker at this present moment. The Korean brand plans on achieving this by entering into new segments that have promising outlooks.
The mini SUV will sit a segment below the new Hyundai Creta, with power probably derived from a 1.2 litre petrol that sits under the i20 Active and a 1.4 litre CRDi diesel, in accordance to India's small car regulations. Will Hyundai be able to give Maruti Suzuki and Ford a hard time? Competition is stiffening, now that Datsun and Renault have joined the game.
